Challenge Entry Finished - Millie Restyled Again

I finished my entry for Quilt Con Michael Miller Challenge in the nick of time. I submitted my entry on November 30, the final day to enter. I didn't procrastinate; I had a hard time coming up with a design.

That is until I checked out, Ultimate Quilt Block Collection by Lynne Goldsworthy, from the local library! Lynne is a British quilter who quilts and works under the name Lily's Quilts. I paged through her book and came upon her block called "Millie Restyled." 

Right away I pictured how I could use Lynne's pattern and restyle it again for my entry. This, of course, depended on getting her permission. I emailed her on Friday night telling about the Challenge-that I wanted to use her pattern as inspiration in my modern quilt entry. She emailed permission on Monday. I am so very grateful for Lynne's permission because I am very pleased with my quilt.


I fittingly call my quilt MILLIE RESTYLED AGAIN.

"Millie Restyled" is a paper piecing pattern that I copied from the book and used as my center medallion. I chose where to place the Michael Miller Challenge fabrics. I added my own components as a wide 4 inch border incorporating peach and teal triangles moving out from the center in a slight twist for a little movement. The lighter olive green Hash Dash fabric triangles point toward the center, bringing the eye back to the medallion.

I quilted this 20" x 20" quilt on my domestic sewing machine using my own design. I buried all the threads within the two layers of batting. The background, binding, and backing are white Cotton Coture by Michael Miller.

And now, I wait.

Fandangle Fat Quarters

The fat quarter bundle I ordered from Christa Watson
arrived today! She had a Labor Day sale 
that I didn't want to pass up.
Look at these fun, bright colors of Fandangle,
Christa's newest line of fabrics.


I am not sure what I am going to sew with these.
I'd like to make a quilt with the entire bundle.
Christa has a Quilt Along on her blog 
using her Dot 'n' Dash pattern HERE 
that would make a great quilt.
But some zipper bags for Christmas gifts would be nice.
Or perhaps some fun placemats.

Island Batik Alumni Ambassadors Blog Hop

Today I will show my project for the Spring Fling Use It Up blog hop. Some of the Island Batik alumni ambassadors, and some of the current ambassadors, are participating. 
The idea came from Alumni Patti, with the idea of "Use it up." We were to make any FUN - SMALL project. The goal is to use up our Island Batik scraps, leftover from when WE were blogging - with what was the current IB fabrics.
I have quite a few scraps:

I wanted to use my Accuquilt Go! cutter (I haven't used it in a while) and chose the Flying Geese die. I cut out more pieces than I needed. I did not use the yellows or the red and orange scraps, so another project is in the works with those. I liked using the blues, greens and sandy colors. I laid out two options:


I chose the second layout because of the movement I got with the flying geese units. I kept thinking SAND and SEA every time I positioned the units. So the title of my table runner is "OF SAND AND SEA."

And here is the final project, free motion machine quilted and bound:


But, darn it! I still haven't used up all the scraps of Island Batik fabrics! Perhaps, there will be another Alumni Ambassador Blog Hop. That would be fun!

Four-in-Art Reveal

I belong to a quilt group called Four-in-Art. Every 3 months we reveal individual quilt projects we have designed based on our yearly theme and a quarterly sub-theme. This year our theme is Light. This quarter's sub-theme was Shimmer. 

I had some silver lame in my sewing room that I wanted to use. I backed it with fusible woven interfacing for stability. I wanted to use batiks in blues and teals for a watery effect. I had two tries that didn't please me. My final try was what I had envisioned. So here is my 12 inch square quilt:

Shimmering Ponds

The 4 blocks were paper pieced. I randomly placed the lame in the pineapple block.
The day I photographed this, the sun was shining and the snow was fresh and white. 
I was pleased with the shimmering effect in the photo.

Quilting Can Benefit Petfinder Foundation

The Island Batik Ambassadors learned about the Petfinder Foundation and how some of the quilting industry is helping this 20-year-old foundation. 

 There is a blog hop that is going on right now with some great giveaways offered through these companies. 

 I am very excited to tell you that Island Batik is introducing two new animal fabric collections at International Quilt Market – Fifi and Fido and Happy Hounds!

Down The Road

My Road Home Quilt Row

I am happy to be able to reveal my row for The Road Home Row Along. 


 What an undertaking! Marian of Seams To Be Sew and Amy of Sew Incredibly Crazy worked for many months organizing and scheduling the designers and then gathering sponsors. 40 designers, from all over the world, creating quilt rows representing HOME to each of them. Thanks and more thanks to both of you. And a big thank you to the many sponsors who have supplied the giveaways for the duration of this Row Along. The giveaways can be found below.

 I have lived in Michigan my entire life. I was born, raised and attended college on the east side of the state, a very large metropolitan area. I moved to a rural area on the west side of Michigan, about 30 miles from the shores of Lake Michigan, when I began teaching. I have traveled throughout Michigan and have enjoyed making memories of the places I have gone. What I have especially appreciated is the flora and fauna that can be seen around the state. I chose to create appliques that represent some (I had to limit what I chose) of the wildlife I have seen as I travel to and from "home."

 My row has appliques of a white-tailed deer, a green darner dragonfly, apple blossoms, a robin and dwarf lake iris--these are just some of the "state symbols" for Michigan. We see deer in our own backyard and are watchful when driving as they can run into or across the roads at any time. (Twice in my driving, I have had cars damaged when a deer jumped in front of me.) 

 I live near and travel through The Ridge, the area where all kinds of fruits and vegetables are grown, especially apples (my favorite) so, I included the apple blossom, our state flower. 

 Our state bird, the robin, migrates north and announces Spring's arrival as they eat and hop on lawns and build nests. I included the green darner dragonfly because they are found along and near much of Michigan's waterways darting about eating insects. 

 The official state wildflower is the dwarf lake iris, which I have seen when traveling during the summer in the Upper Peninsula. It is a small, rare flower, that grows in low wet spots near beaches, not on them. It is "found only on the coastlines of northern Lake Michigan and northern and easter Lake Huron, a small site on the southern shore of Lake Superior, and a few isolated islands of the Great Lakes." 

 The state motto is: if you are seeking a pleasant peninsula, look around you. The native Ojibwa people called this area mishigamaa  which means, "large water" or "large lake."The French named it Michigan. Michigan is surrounded by 4 of the 5 Great Lakes: Superior, Michigan, Huron, and Erie. Michigan is two peninsulas; one is shaped like a mitten.  In fact, when we show someone where we live, we point to a place on our hand. 


We can also show the upper and lower peninsulas with both our hands. When I was a kid, the car license plates were green and white and said, "Water Winter Wonderland" on them.

I have learned to appreciate all we have in Michigan and try my best to insure these wondeful flora and fauna are here for future generations.
